Hey Bonga and welcome to Minimal Mag! How has 2023 been for you so far?
It’s been amazing, to say the least. Released my Debut album which has been received with such grace, I’ve already played in parts of the world that I never thought I would and there’s so much more to look forward to.
You come from a small town in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. What was the underground music scene like there and how did you get into electronic production?
Well, coming from a village there was not much of that going on until I went to the City of Johannesburg, which is the hub of the dance scene in the continent. There, the underground scene is very rife till this day, and I got into it through curiosity, from attending events and then graduating to djing & production.
Your next project is your debut album releasing on Mayonie Productions. Is this your first release on the label? And what makes it the perfect outlet for your sound?
This is my second release with Mayonie and it’s been the perfect outlet for these two projects because we share a common vision and goal for my music and the future of Afro House/Tech within South Africa and with their UMG Africa partnership they’ve been able to grow my brand to a position it wasn’t at before.
What was your production process for the LP?
Quite an interesting process and journey, some of the work was on the road while touring & bulk at the studio. I have quite a lot of collaborations on the album, about 80% of the album, and these collaborations are with quite big artists in my country and the world of dance music, so it was a big challenge getting the recordings done due to busy schedules, but we got it done. There are tracks that didn’t make the album due to time, so there might just be a deluxe album on the horizon, but don’t quote me on that.
